You may not have time to review the various Fairtrade Easter eggs available this year so we took a hit for the team. It was a difficult job but someone had to do it. Here are the results of our blind taste test.
Sainsbury’s Belgian Milk Chocolate Easter Egg, Taste the Difference £3.50 100g (£3.50/100g)
A smooth and creamy egg. What it lacks in thickness it makes up for in flavour and appearance. Although it’s not particularly child friendly, its pretty golden pattern makes it an ideal gift. Although it says that the plastic packaging is recyclable, the panel weren’t confident that they could recycle it at home.
*The best all-rounder*
The Real Easter Egg from the Meaningful Chocolate Company £3.99 150g (£2.66/100g)
As the only egg with both a clear Easter message and a gift, our panel loved it. Although it’s not the perfect gift for an adult, this egg is made of yummy galaxy-tasting chocolate at a great price. This egg is an Easter day experience for any child recipient, lasting after the chocolate has all disappeared.
*The Specialist Egg*
Plamil Dairy Free Easter Egg £3.69 85g (£4.34/100g)
Although this dairy free egg couldn’t compete with the others on flavour, it won the judges round with its fun packaging. It is the ideal gift for a child to enable them to participate beyond receiving a regular chocolate bar. We couldn’t find any other Fairtrade dairy free eggs so this really fits a gap in the market.
*The Grownup Egg*
Divine Toffee and Sea Salt Easter Egg £5.00 100g (£5.00/100g)
This feminine egg has a great, Daim bar crunchy flavour. Its aftertaste is sublime. Some of the panel weren’t a fan of the toffee and sea salt combination but Divine have a wide range to suit a variety of tastes.
*The Classic Designer Egg*
Green & Black’s Milk Chocolate Egg 165g £6.00 (£3.64/100g)
With its classic feel, this egg is great value for money. It split the panel with half finding the texture powdery while those who usually prefer darker chocolate loving it. If you buy this for a milk chocolate taste you will be disappointed.
Thank you to my lovely ladies’ group who gave up an evening to eat chocolate with me.
Thank you also to Divine, Real Easter Egg Company, and Plamil for your kind samples. The panel were not aware which eggs were gifted, the tasting was blind.
